Warm Up: Wedding Gift- students will write a short journal response for what they would give Pedro and Tita as a wedding present.

Instructional Plan:

  • We will read aloud chapter 12 of Like Water for Chocolate and discuss the text as we read to enhance student comprehension.
  • Students will work together in groups of three to finish their chapter outline.
  • Test Review- students will take the test for the second part of the novel next class period.

Closing Summarizer:  Changing the ending- students will speculate how they would change the ending of the novel.
Students will use ninjawords.com and wordnik.com as ways to look up “culture vocabulary” from the novel, Like Water for Chocolate.

– students will begin viewing Real Women Have Curves.  They will use a film analysis guide to compare the film to the novel Like Water for Chocolate.

Closing Summarizer: Comparisons- students will create a list of comparisons from the film and the novel.

4/23-4/27, 2012

Tuesday/Wednesday:

Warm Up: Word Splash- students will choose a character from the novel and write a few sentences using the mandatory words: love, sacrifice, suffering, and independence.
Instructional Plan:

  • We will read aloud chapter 10 of Like Water for Chocolate and discuss the text as we read to enhance student comprehension.
  • Students will work in groups of 3 to complete a list of sensory notes detailing various examples of imagery located in the text.  After this  analysis, they will work together to finish their chapter outline.

Closing Summarizer:  What I KNOW- Students will list 3 things the absolutely KNOW about the novel reading from the class today.

Thursday/Friday:

Warm Up: Who can I relate to?  Students will pick any character from the novel and explain in a short journal entry how they can relate to the character.

Instructional Plan:

  • We will read aloud chapter 11 of Like Water for Chocolate and discuss the text as we read to enhance student comprehension.
  • Students will work together in groups of three to finish their chapter outline.

Closing Summarizer:  Exit Ticket- students will complete an exit ticket that asks them to summarize the day’s lesson.

Monday/Tuesday:  Students will complete the test for chapters 1-6 of Like Water for Chocolate.

Wednesday/Thursday:

Warm Up: First word- students will be given a random character’s name and asked to create an acrostic for that character.


Instructional Plan:

  • We will read aloud chapter 8 of Like Water for Chocolate and discuss the text as we read to enhance student comprehension.
  • Students will work in groups of 3 to analyze three themes of Like Water for Chocolate.  After this theme analysis, they will work together to finish their chapter outline.

Closing Summarizer:  Poem Creation- students will write a poem about a theme from the novel to share with a peer and the class.

Students will use ninjawords.com and wordnik.com as ways to look up “culture vocabulary” from the novel, Like Water for Chocolate.

Friday/Monday:

Warm Up: Journal topic- what is one thing that has happened in your life that you would change for the better?

Tuesday/Wednesday: Students will work on their chapter outlines for chapters 1-6 from Like Water for Chocolate.  They will also create a quiz for the vocabulary portion of their upcoming test.

Thursday: I will be out and students will complete critical reading work with a sub.

Friday/Monday: Students will complete their 1/2 way unit tests for Like Water for Chocolate.

Warm Up: Burning Hot Discussion Questions- students will select two of five possible questions and answer them.  We will discuss the answers as a class.


Instructional Plan:

  • We will read aloud chapter 5 of Like Water for Chocolate and discuss the text as we read to enhance student comprehension.
  • Students will be given time in class to work on their summative assessment.

Closing Summarizer:  Create your own burning questions for chapter 4.  Students will create 2 discussion questions based on the material covered in class.

Thursday/Friday:

Warm Up: Count down- 5 things you have learned so far, 4 new words, 3 adjectives that describe Tita, 2 comments you have about the plot or characters, and 1 question you still have about the story.

  • We will read aloud chapter 6 of Like Water for Chocolate and discuss the text as we read to enhance student comprehension.
  • Students will be given time in class to work on their summative assessment.

  • Students will have in-class time to work on their novel summative assessment.

Like Water for Chocolate Extra Credit

Monday-Monday- Students will work in-class to complete their Inferno summative assessments.  All assessments will be due Friday for Blue classes and Monday (the 11th) for White classes.

-Finish visuals
-Turn projects in at the end of class

Inferno Project- To be completed IN CLASS ONLY

Dante’s Inferno Project

ELA10RL1: Demonstrate comprehension of literature.

1. You will select a guide to take you through the Inferno.  This person can be living or dead, real or fictional; however, you must provide a well-developed paragraph as to why they will be your guide. (25 points)

2. You will create your own Inferno and make a visual that shows it.  This can be a map, a movie poster, a symbolic image, anything that you think will accurately describe your Inferno.  It must have the following elements: (100 points)

Clean and neatly drawn images

Color

At least 5 circles/realms/levels

Short explanation of each circle/realm/level that includes the sin and punishment

A list of at least 3 celebrities or historical figures that would be in each circle/realm/level

3. Soundtrack– you will pick a song for each of your 5+ circles/realms/levels of your Inferno.  You will provide the lyrics, with inappropriate lyrics blocked out, and an explanation of each song and how it fits the circle/realm/level.  Each explanation must be at least 5-7 sentences. (50 points)

4. Most Memorable Quotes: You will select one quote from each of the four cantos that we read that you believe are the most memorable from the reading.  You will then explain the importance of each quote in 3-4 sentences.  In total you will have four quotes with explanations.  Canto I- pg. 659, Canto III-pg. 665, Canto V- pg. 675, Canto XXXIV- pg. 683.

5. BONUS POINTS: You can burn a CD of your songs and create a CD Cover for an additional 50 points.  This is not mandatory; you only need to complete it if you want bonus points.
